Carnegie Group Ltd has completed all major works of the full refurbishment of a two-storey building, “The Palindrome”, to become a new advanced manufacturing centre for GEW (EC) Limited, a leading manufacturer of UV curing systems for printing, coating, and converting applications.  The overall size of the facility in Crawley is 5,200 m². It is now managing the project in its final stages.

Carnegie Group acted as both principal construction company and principal designer for the project that included a complete transformation of the existing building; concept design, architectural services, planning, construction and building control management. The works also included a steel frame extension, reaching 10m deep by 45m across, adding extra space to the overall building.  Demolition and hard landscaping, along with the creation of a high-specification interior tailored to GEW’s precise operational requirements completed the project.

One of the challenges involved meeting water neutrality requirements during the planning process. Fixtures designed for low water usage were selected and a new greywater tank was installed that doubled previous capacity.

Externally, the refurbishment involved installing new cladding, resurfaced access areas, and upgraded drainage, giving the building a contemporary and durable finish. Internally, Carnegie Group constructed new walls and partitions, delivered a complete fit out with office workspace, storage areas, and staff canteen facilities.

“Refurbishment and remodelling are in many ways more complex than building from scratch.  This project was all about delivering a flexible, efficient, and high-quality working environment that fulfilled the requirement for an advanced manufacturing centre,” said David Mindham, Group Director and Co-Founder Carnegie Group Ltd. “GEW’s brief required a design and specification that reflected their position as a technology leader, while ensuring the space would support both their current and future operational needs.”

The refurbished advanced manufacturing centre will provide GEW with a modern, energy-efficient workplace, that will support the company’s continued growth in its global operations.
